Tens and Ones for Kindergarten, UKG | Set of 12 Worksheets

Hello everyone, I hope you all are doing great. Lately I’ve been getting many requests regarding how I introduced the place value concept to my 4 years old. In my latest video I’ve shared all the details, starting with an introduction of the topic so that it’s easier for you (parent) to understand the concept before you teach it to your child. I’ve shared a fun activity to introduce tens and ones and also explained it on the notebook. Place value is much easier when children can physically see that ten ones can be exchanged for one ten. Before relying on written numbers, I demonstrate the idea with objects that can be bundled and unbundled.

Build tens before writing place values

• Count ten straws or craft sticks and tie them into one bundle.
• Build a two-digit number using bundles for tens and loose pieces for ones.
• Say the number in both forms: “34” and “3 tens and 4 ones.”
• Change one digit and ask what must be added, removed or exchanged.

Using the worksheets effectively

Complete the first example together and ask your child to point to the tens column and ones column before writing. If the columns are reversed, return to the physical bundles rather than repeating the rule.

Use only a few questions at a time. Between pages, practise with house numbers, prices or scores so place value becomes part of everyday number talk.

Parent tip: When ten loose ones are collected, exchange them for a tens bundle. That exchange is the heart of place value and later makes carrying in addition easier to understand.
