I love simple craft activities that give children something meaningful to make. In this tutorial, I show how I make an easy DIY rakhi that children can enjoy for Raksha Bandhan, a sibling, or a school craft activity.

What I cover in this video

I walk you through the idea step by step and share practical ways to make it work at home. You can pause the video, try one small part, and return when your child is ready.

What we need

I use a thread or ribbon, colourful paper or foam, child-safe scissors, glue, and a few decorations. Let your child choose the colours and pattern so the finished rakhi feels personal.

How I make it

I keep the shapes simple, build the design one layer at a time, and check that each piece is secure before adding the next detail. Children can pause after each stage and copy the movement at their own pace.

Make it a learning moment

While we craft, I talk about colours, patterns, symmetry, and how a handmade gift can show care. Older children can sketch their design first or write a small note to go with it.

My notes for parents

This is an edited version of the ideas I share in the video. I recommend watching the video once, then choosing the suggestions that fit your child and your routine. There is no need to finish everything in one sitting.

My parent tip: Keep the first session short, notice your child’s effort, and come back to the activity another day.

Prepare the materials before pressing play, and let your child take the lead on the creative choices.
