Living outside India, one thing I think about often is how to keep my daughter connected to India—not just through food, festivals and traditions, but through its history and stories too.
Growing up in India, so much of this learning happened naturally. We celebrated important days at school, listened to stories about India’s history, participated in special assemblies and simply absorbed so much from the world around us.
But when you’re raising a child away from India, that connection sometimes needs to be created a little more intentionally.
I want my girl to know where her family comes from, understand her roots and stay curious about India. So whenever there is an important festival, celebration or historical day, I try to turn it into a small learning opportunity at home.
And India’s Independence Day on August 15 is definitely one of those days.
That’s exactly why I created this FREE India Independence Day Printable Activity Pack for Kids.
I originally designed these worksheets for my daughter, but then I thought—why keep them just for us?

The activities introduce children to names such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, Sarojini Naidu, Rani Lakshmibai and Sardar Patel, alongside important Independence Day vocabulary and Indian landmarks and symbols.
A Little History Along the Way
I didn’t want the printable to be only puzzles.
I’ve also included two short reading passages so children can understand a little of the story behind August 15.
The first introduces children to India’s first Independence Day, August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru as the first Prime Minister of independent India, and his famous Tryst with Destiny speech.
The second explores how Independence Day is celebrated—from flag-hoisting and the celebrations at the Red Fort to the songs, speeches, quizzes and cultural programs children may see at schools. Most importantly, it encourages children to think about freedom, unity and responsibility.
More Than Just Learning Facts
For me, activities like these aren’t about making my daughter memorize dates and names.
They’re about starting conversations.
Why do we celebrate August 15?
What did independence mean for India?
Who were some of the people who contributed to India’s freedom movement?
Why do we hoist the Indian flag?
What do freedom, unity and responsibility mean to us today?
Even if our children are growing up thousands of kilometres away from India, I want them to have opportunities to ask these questions.
Because staying connected to your roots doesn’t necessarily mean teaching children everything at once.
Sometimes it begins with one story, one activity, one conversation at a time.
And that’s what I hope this little printable can do. ❤️
