Sudoku is not a maths test; it is a logic puzzle. Children do not need advanced calculation, but they do need to understand that each symbol or number can appear only once in every row, column and smaller section.

Introduce Sudoku one rule at a time

• Begin with a 4×4 puzzle and complete a row that has only one missing choice.
• Ask which options are already used before deciding what can go in the empty space.
• Use counters, picture tiles or small number cards so a choice can be moved before writing.
• Move to 6×6 puzzles only when the child can explain the 4×4 rule independently.

Prompts that teach logical thinking

Instead of giving the answer, ask: “What is missing?”, “Where is this number already used?” and “How can we check?” These questions reveal the process and help children notice their own mistakes.

If the grid feels overwhelming, cover part of the page and work on one row or column. Celebrate careful checking rather than speed.

Parent tip: Print the pages or place them in reusable sleeves. A wipe-clean marker lets children test an answer, correct it and try again without feeling that the page has been spoiled.
