When children first learn numbers, I like to move beyond simple counting and help them notice what each number actually means. This free number-sense activity gives young learners a playful way to compare quantities, recognise numerals and talk about their thinking.
What your child will practise
- Recognising written numbers and matching them to quantities.
- Counting carefully without skipping or counting an object twice.
- Comparing groups using words such as more, fewer and equal.
- Explaining an answer in a complete sentence.
How I use this activity at home
Start with just one page and let your child point to each object while counting aloud. If counting on paper feels difficult, place small objects such as buttons, blocks or rajma beside the worksheet and build the same quantity. Once the answer is clear, ask your child to circle, colour or say the matching number.
Keep the session short—about ten minutes is enough for this age. Repeat the activity on another day with different household objects. Repetition helps, but changing the objects keeps the idea fresh and shows that the number stays the same even when the objects look different.
Questions that build number sense
- How did you know how many there were?
- What would happen if we added one more?
- Can you make the same number in a different way?
- Which group has fewer objects? How can you check?
Parent tip: Accuracy matters more than speed. If your child loses track, slow down and move each object after counting it. That simple habit builds a strong foundation for addition and subtraction later.
