Hey guys, I hope you all are healthy and safe. Many of you were asking me about our ‘Read it Yourself‘ series, like, What should you teach after phonics? How to teach CVC words? What next after the CVC words? Finally, after a lot of research, I’ve created some resources that will be helpful for you to help your young readers. I cant wait to see you guys using these phonics flashcards with your kids.
In this post, I am sharing with you a printable set of Phonics. It is a short vowel set (a, e, i, o, u) that you can download for free! After the download, take colour prints, laminate them, cut them into flashcards, and go through them with your kids. There is a total of 28 flashcards in this Phonic set. This first phonics set supports the step between knowing individual letter sounds and reading short words. Children need to hear each sound, hold it in mind and blend the sounds together without long pauses.
Before beginning the worksheet
- Review the letter sounds used on the page without naming the letters.
- Stretch a simple word slowly, then sweep your finger under it as the sounds blend together.
- Use counters or blocks—one for each sound—to make the word structure visible.
- Ask your child to choose a matching picture only after saying the blended word aloud.
Keep blending playful
If your child says each sound correctly but cannot hear the word, shorten the gaps between sounds. Model the blend and let them copy before trying independently.
Mix reading with word building. Change one letter at a time, such as cat to cap, and ask what changed in the sound and meaning. This develops flexible decoding rather than memorising a list.
Parent tip: Return to easier two- or three-sound words whenever frustration appears. Secure blending is more important than moving quickly to longer words.
