Alphabet flashcards are most useful when children can see, say and use each letter in a meaningful way. I prefer introducing a few letters at a time and connecting them with familiar names, toys and sounds.

Simple alphabet games to try

  • Find the first letter in your child’s name and in the names of family members.
  • Choose a card, say its sound and look for an object that begins with that sound.
  • Arrange a small group in alphabetical order while singing only that part of the alphabet song.
  • Place cards around the room and call out a letter for your child to find.

Uppercase, lowercase and letter sounds

Children may be able to sing the alphabet without recognising individual letters. Show cards in a mixed order so they learn the shape rather than relying on the sequence.

When the uppercase letters are familiar, pair them with lowercase letters. Keep the sound short and clear, and avoid adding an extra “uh” sound that can make blending harder later.

Parent tip: Do not rush all 26 letters. Revisit a small set until your child can recognise them in books, labels and everyday print.
