Sight words are high frequency words that we find in any text and children should know them to become fluent readers. There are just few sight words that we can read using phonic sounds but rest don’t follow phonetic patterns and we’ve to memorize them. I’ve created a set of sight words flash cards in which I’ve included all the sight words you need to teach from nursery to class-1. Do watch our YouTube video for more resources and some interactive worksheets ideas.

Sight words appear frequently in early books, so recognising them quickly can make reading feel smoother. Flashcards help, but I combine them with sentences and real books so each word keeps its meaning.

Make sight-word practice active

  • Choose five cards and read them together before playing.
  • Hide the cards around the room and ask your child to read each word they find.
  • Build a short sentence with two or three cards and add missing words orally.
  • Look for the same word on a cereal box, sign or page of a familiar book.

A gentle weekly routine

Practise the same small set for several days. Put confident words in one pile and words that still need help in another, then begin each session with an easy success.

If a word is difficult, notice its first sound, shape and any unusual part. Ask your child to say it, trace it with a finger and use it in a spoken sentence.

Parent tip: Fast recall develops gradually. Avoid drilling a large stack or correcting before your child has time to think.
